Picture of the Day: All You Need to Know About Egypt’s Oldest Fencing Competition
Upper Egypt is one of the places in Egypt that still keeps its heritage alive. Al-Mermah or Spearing is considered Egypt’s oldest fencing competition. Men from different tribes compete against each other, and both the rider and the winning horse are seen as respected and honored members of the community after the victory. The competition is usually divided into a part where the participants, or knights (as people like to call them), compete to achieve points and win and another part where they dance to the beat of the drums.
