Budget-Friendly Mobile Plans for Retirees in 2024

Most people consider anyone over 65 a retiree, although the full retirement age in the US has risen to 67. Whether considered a retiree or not, most (89 percent) Americans 50 and over have a smartphone for calling or texting. Over half (60 percent) use it for social networking, so they need a mobile plan to stay connected.

However, most retirees live on a fixed income, so the cost of a mobile plan is a significant factor when choosing a provider. Fortunately, various cell phone service providers offer budget-friendly mobile plans for seniors. Let’s check what the offers are for 2024.

T-Mobile Essentials Choice 55

T-Mobile has long since had plans designed for the senior lifestyle. While their rates have gone up a bit, its Essentials Choice 55 is still good value at $60 for two lines, all in. It is available to anyone over 55 and comes with unlimited calls, texts, and data without speed restrictions.

It also offers scam protection (Scam Shield Premium) and 3G mobile hotspot data features (upgradable to 5G at no extra cost). You can also upgrade to its Go5G Plus plan that includes everything in Essentials Choice 55 plus Apple TV+ access and 50Gb mobile hotspot data. The only drawback to this plan is that you only get 2G mobile data in Canada and Mexico and cannot add lines.

US Mobile Unlimited Starter

While not exclusive to seniors, the US Mobile Unlimited Starter plan is a winner for seniors who like to travel at $23 monthly. It includes unlimited calls, texts, and 5G mmWave & C-band data. The plan also comes with 10GB of hotspot data and 1GB of international data. US Mobile’s Warp 5G rides on Verizon’s network, while its GSM offering runs on T-Mobile. If you don’t travel outside the US, opt for the even cheaper Unlimited Flex at $15 monthly.

The only real issue with US Mobile plans at these prices is you must pay annually. Additionally, high-speed data is limited to 35GB. You must upgrade to the Unlimited Premium plan for more high-speed data.

If you don’t want to prepay for a whole year, sign up for the Unlimited Starter plan for $29 or the Unlimited Premium for $50 monthly. If you have three or more lines, the monthly cost goes down to $25 and $40, respectively.

Ultra Mobile Talk and Text

Like the US Mobile Unlimited plans, Ultra Mobile does not have exclusive plans for retirees. However, its no-contract options make it attractive for those looking for flexibility. The cheapest is the Talk and Text plan at $15 for 250MB of 5G Data and unlimited talk and text locally and internationally. It is mobile hotspot capable but does not come with data. You can add what you need as you need it.

The catch is the $15 is not all in. It does not include taxes and fees, so you might pay more than expected. You can get them at a lower price by paying in advance for three, six, or 12 months. For example, the Talk and Text plan goes down to $8 a month if you spend $96 upfront for a year’s service.

Consumer Cellular AARP plans

Consumer Cellular offers excellent deals for anyone needing affordable cell phone service, including seniors. It has been offering discounted AARP cell phone plans for 15 years, and in 2024, that is a two-line, no-contract unlimited talk, text, and data plan with 5G coverage at $55. AARP members should use the code AARP55 when signing up for a plan. Non-members can sign up for an AARP membership on the Consumer Cellular website during checkout.

AARP switchers can also get a five percent discount when they choose any unlimited talk and text plan for one line. Regular plans start at $20 monthly for 1GB of data for one line. For unlimited data, you pay $50 a month.

The best thing about Consumer Cellular is it has excellent coverage in North America. You’ll also get 5G and 5G+ coverage across many states and densely populated cities.

Verizon 55 Plus Unlimited

Verizon has a special plan for retirees, or at least people 55 and older, but there’s a catch. They only offer it to Florida residents, and they must enroll in autopay. The plan includes unlimited calls, texts, 4G data, and unlimited mobile hot spotting at $62 for one line and $84 for two. It’s a bit pricey but still a good deal compared to the plans above. If you don’t qualify, you can opt for its prepaid plan at $35 monthly with 5G coverage, including 15GB of data.

Lively Medical Alert Plans

Lively is an interesting and possibly lifesaving option for retirees with health issues. This phone carrier offers flexible plans with health and safety add-ons that can come in handy for seniors, though anyone can sign up for them. The plans start at $19.99 monthly, including unlimited talk, text, and free Lyft ride scheduling. The plan with the Urgent Response and medical alert features costs $39.99 monthly. If you want data, you can pay for it as an add-on.

Is it the cheapest plan on the planet? No, it isn’t, especially since the plans exclude taxes and fees, and you must buy a phone from them. However, the medical alert feature makes it an attractive option for concerned family members. Additionally, you can keep your existing number when you sign up for the service.

Retirees Have It Good

Budget-friendly mobile plans are available for retirees in 2024, from those seeking the best deals for international travel to individuals prioritizing health and safety features. These options ensure that staying connected doesn’t have to break the bank. When choosing the appropriate plan, consider your needs, usage habits, and financial situation. You can stay connected and enjoy the golden years without unnecessary expenses.
