Al Masry Al Youm Caricature Makes Fun of Sexual Harrasment and It’s Not OK
One day after El Shorouk News published an article with the N-Word in the front page headline, Egyptian publications continued to surprise us as Al Masry Al Youm published a caricature on Sunday that is nothing but very sexist and offensive.
The caricature shows a guy talking to a girl’s dad about proposing to her, and he’s shocked that her father is asking for a dowry (as most Egyptian parents do) considering that “half of the guys in the area harassed her during Eid.”
Now, this is COMPLETELY unacceptable. It’s making fun of a serious issue and taking matters like sexual harassment very lightly. Not only that, it’s also extremely offensive to those who have had to deal with harassment and rape survivors. Once again, we’re flabbergasted and in absolute shock that something like this could get approved by so many people. Seriously, how did they think this would be acceptable?
Later that day, Al Masry Al Youm issued an online apology regarding the incident, but the damage was done. They claimed that they’re apologetic for publishing the caricature and that they ‘condemn that crime’ and that they ‘support all the community and official initiatives to eliminate this crime that has turned our streets into an unsafe place for women.’ Sadly, it’s the mentalities of people like those who created this caricature, approved it and thought it was okay to publish that makes our streets unsafe for women.
