Everything You Need To Know About Abu Dhabi’s New Crown Prince

Abu Dhabi has just crowned a new prince. The UAE president, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has appointed his eldest son, Sheikh Khaled as the crown prince of Abu Dhabi.

Along with Sheikh Khaled, his brothers, Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s national security adviser who controls a sprawling business empire, and Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan have been appointed to deputy rulers of Abu Dhabi.

Having previously overseen many of the Emirate’s biggest recent development projects, along with its highly successful start-up incubator, Hub71, Sheikh Khaled has been known to take on many powerful roles in the past years. Yet his appointment to prince was still a surprise as it marks a “generational shift among UAE rulers, with the president choosing a son rather than a brother to take over the office,” Bloomberg says.

Kristin Smith Diwan, senior resident scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington shared her thoughts on the new power shift by saying,”[Sheikh Khaled] has been empowered in numerous positions that give him leadership experience in oil, the economy, and governance.”
