On the 8th of June, Yemeni Americans celebrated their heritage in the ultimate American way: a parade. Hoping to raise awareness and an appreciation for the Yemeni culture, and to shed light on its contribution to the United States, Yemeni Americans paraded down Rhinelander Avenue in Morris Park last Saturday.
With traditional clothing, music, and dance, millions of Yemenis from around the world were honored. Thousands attended including elected officials Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
“The Muslim community is not only growing, but it’s driving and making the Bronx better over the last 10 years we’ve grown exponentially,” Diaz told News 12 The Bronx.
The parade marks the one-year anniversary of the travel ban imposed by President Donald Trump on Muslim-majority countries. The event was a chance for Yemenis to discuss their rights and Islamophobia in the US.
