13 Times Egyptians Excelled at Being Fatayeen in 2016
I’ve been told on various occasions this month that my social media addiction has become obnoxious and it’s time for a digital-free and peaceful break. In my 12 hours away from Facebook, I felt like Nelly Kareem in Ta7t ElSaytara, itching and suffering to keep my fingers away from my phone to read all about the drama that is happening non-stop on my beloved apps.
The separation made me realize that the one thing I have become emotionally dependent on is my fellow Egyptians’ ability to make anything sound real. We love making up stories, we love sharing them even when they defy every sense of logic and we choose to believe them for the sake of a three-second-long “OMG” moment.
Here are all the viral posts where Egyptians loved being fatayeen in only the first month and a half of 2016:
Let’s start with the biggest eshteghala of the year: the man who was praised by 90 million Egyptians for doing nothing. This is 2016’s Mr. X
A brilliant Egyptian decided and succeeded to convince us that this Italian model is Hanan ElKoiffera
People started linking the condom prank to Gihan Fadel’s movie roles because apparently, she’s Ahmed Malek’s mom. Commenters were enraged and the level of delusion was hilarious
We decided it’s Mohamed Henedy’s birthday and suddenly, the guy gets thousands of birthday wishes out of nowhere
Ibrahim Saeed couldn’t leave the Ahmed Ezz/Zeina saga alone. We all shared his comment, but the joke was on us because it’s a six-year-old photo and that’s not her kid
Is there a deeper meaning behind this statement? Maybe it’s a political code
Definitely. This doesn’t sound odd at all…
Students decided to prank parents all over the country by sharing this two-year-old video
We know the Giza Zoo is horrifying, but sorry guys, these lions that went viral are in Yemen
I was just watching next week’s ad on MBC Masr minutes ago… Anyway, the drama following this post was enticing
We chose to believe fake news that this guy – who in real life is model Ricardo Baldin – looks like an Egyptian and is also the world’s youngest billionaire
So what???
How on earth did he think of that number? Fataaay with a capital F
But again, this tweet just explained it all
