10 Things You Didn’t Know About Spinning
The El Gouna International Spinning Marathon is approaching fast and we are beyond excited for the party on pedals by the sea!
In anticipation of the all-day celebration of fitness and strength happening on Saturday, Apr. 18, here are some things you probably didn’t know about the stationary sport:
1. Spinning® was revolutionized in the mid-1980s by personal trainer and endurance bicycle racer Johnny Goldberg (“Johnny G”)
Johnny G competed in two cross-country bicycle races and was passionate about helping people to get in shape.
2. The first official Spinning® programs were offered in Goldberg’s Santa Monica, California fitness center in 1989
…Followed soon after at Voight Fitness in West Hollywood in 1991, and in 1993 at Crunch Gyms in New York
3. The Spinning® community speaks more than 25 languages
Spinners live in more than 80 countries and ride in tens of thousands of official Spinning facilities with thousands of Certified Spinning Instructors.
4. The Spinning® program is not just about exercise
Spinning classes offer a variety of rides, movements, coaching and motivation that keep riders safe, excited and engaged. With over 20 years of experience, Spinning has cultivated a program and global community that delivers the highest level of group indoor cycling.
5. The average indoor cyclist can burn 400-600 calories
This is during a 40-minute workout when averaging 80-110 rpms – an equivalent to 15-20 road miles.
6. Indoor cycling uses specific hand positions and five core movements
The different positions target different muscles.
7. Indoor cycling is a low impact workout
It enhances your cardiovascular health and is easy on the knees and other joints.
8. Indoor cycling improves diabetes control
It also improves strength, reduces blood pressure and helps with weight loss.
9. Indoor cycling participants may experience a rush of endorphins that can aid in mental health
Benefits include better sleep, lower stress levels and deeper relaxation.
10. People who follow a regular Spinning® program suffer less from stress
Spinners are better able to focus on their outside objectives and activities.
