With Mercedes-Benz Returning, Here Are Other Car Manufacturers Assembling in Egypt

On Monday, German auto-manufacturer Daimler AG announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian government for its luxury brand Mercedes-Benz to resume vehicle assembly in Egypt after a fouryear hiatus.

The assembly plant, which is currently being constructed by a local partner, will be providing jobs to many Egyptians. In fact, according to Associated Press, Daimler already employs around 1,000 people directly or indirectly through Mercedes-Bends Egypt. Furthermore, the company is looking forward to establishing its position in the Egyptian market, contributing to its stabilization.

Joerg Burzer, the Mercedes-Benz executive for production and supply chains, has stated that the company could “structure our production network even more flexibly and efficiently and respond even better to the needs of our customers”.

A major car manufacturer such as Mercedes-Benz returning to Egypt is a major sign of the country’s economy recovery. Moreover, Egypt has been investing more in sustainable transport such as electric buses and cars to further diversify the market.

The auto-manufacturing market is growing. Here are some of the other manufacturers that already have assembly plants in Egypt.

Nissan

In March of this year, Minister of Public Business Sector Hesham Tawfik  announced that the government signed a memorandum with the Japanese manufacturer Nissan Motor Company to establish a new factory in Ameriya district of Alexandria to build and export automobiles.

Jeep

In Egypt, Fiat and Jeep have cooperated through The Arab Organization for Industrialization to manufacture Jeep vehicles in Egypt until 2029. The two sides look forward to producing around 6,000 vehicles per year which will be exported to Arab and African markets as well as to the US and Portugal.

Chevrolet

Since 1983, General Motors Egypt S.M.E. (GME) has been assembling Chevrolet cars and mini buses. In 1996, the 100,000th vehicle left the production plant. Currently, models such as the Lanos, Optra, Cruze, New Aveo, and more are being assembled in Egypt.

Opel

For quite a few years now, GME has been assembling Opel vehicles in Egypt. The German manufacturer in cooperation with the local partner has a number of Opel models such as Astra, Corsa, and Insignia.
