Picture of the Day: Throwback to 1979 When Queen Elizabeth Visited the Emir of Bahrain

In 1979, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh embarked on a six-nation tour of the Gulf states, marking that visit as the first-ever by a female Head of State. During the Queen’s visit to Bahrain, the Emir of Bahrain, Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, hosted an official welcome ceremony, invited her to attend horse and camel racing, and visit an exhibition of local crafts at Budaiya Park, in addition to touring Bahrain’s Museum.
