Today, Oct. 6, marks 40 years since the beginning of the 1973 October War, also known as the Ramadan War and Yom Kippur War, when Egypt defeated Israel, retaking the Suez Canal and Sinai Peninsula. This day is also celebrated as Armed Forces Day in Egypt, a national holiday honoring the country’s military and the 1973 victory.

Public marches, rallies and protests are happening throughout the country today, with pro-military groups and Muslim Brotherhood supporters taking to the streets. Security has also been tightened due to clashes, with a few deaths and many injuries already reported in Cairo since Friday.

In case you missed it, check out these recently released videos about the October 1973 victory that include never-before published details about battles and current interviews with soldiers who lived through it.
