Netanyahu Tweets Threats of Further Military Escalation as Tensions Rise in Syria; What’s Going On?
On Monday, Israeli military forces spotted armed activity by four suspected attackers in the Golan Heights, following which it opened fire on the supposed militants who were seen placing explosives, according to Israeli military sources.
In retaliation, Israel launched airstrikes and fired missiles on Syria’s military targets. Syrian state media later reported “material damage” at military outposts near Damascus.
“We hit a cell and now we hit the dispatchers. We will do what is necessary in order to defend ourselves. I suggest to all of them, including Hezbollah, to consider this,” said Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel. “These are not vain words; they have the weight of the State of Israel and the IDF behind them and this should be taken seriously,” he added.
The Syrian Golan Heights has been occupied by Israel since 1967.
