From Innovative Initiatives to Educational Programs, Here’s How the UAE Is Celebrating Its Month of Reading

As we approach the beginning of March, the UAE celebrates its annual Month of Reading, with this year’s theme being “My Family Reads.” The UAE Ministry of Culture and Youth decided on this year’s slogan after a study done by Emirates Publishers Association revealed that only few parents in the country read to their children, or encourage them to do so. This comes despite the importance of such an activity in improving familial bonds and enhancing their general knowledge.

Today, UAE citizens and residents woke up to a change in their mobile networks which stated ‘UAE Reads,’ as a sign of support from the telecommunication corporation to the UAE’s Month of Reading. The UAE’s national month of reading serves as one of its many efforts to prepare and equip the younger generation in becoming the leaders of tomorrow. Furthermore, they hope in accelerating growth in the country’s journey towards excellence, and transform reading into a daily habit for everyone.

This year, the initiative will focus on “strengthening the role of parents in instilling love for reading among children and establishing reading as an ideal habit in the community.” The UAE will hold multiple campaigns, educational programs, activities for both parents and children, and much more.

In 2016, after the success of the first month of reading, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced that there would be an annual month of reading every March.
