9-year-old Amany Mohamed Fadeel was killed by a leopard last week in her hometown of Kafr Hamid, in Giza governorate. According to the Telegraph, Amany was walking home carrying her baby sister when the leopard attacked. The baby was unharmed, but Amany died of her wounds on her neck en route to the hospital, Al-Arabiya reported.

The leopard reportedly escaped from a wildlife farm south of Cairo several days earlier. The animal was shot and killed by a police marksman after the attack, and the owner of the farm has been arrested. Prosecutors are looking into whether he can be brought up on charges.

The Telegraph quoted villagers as saying the farm has a license to raise animals as pets but that the farmer “had diverted into bigger and more dangerous creatures in the hopes of selling them to zoos.” A video posted online shows children cheering and playing with the animal’s corpse after it was shot by police.

WE SAID THIS: Our thoughts and prayers go out to Amany’s family. We can’t imagine what you’re going through.
