#CreditToTheArtist: Karim Abdel Malak’s ‘Soul’ Is a Tribute to Egyptian Women
Egyptian artist Karim Abdel Malak’s newest exhibition “Soul” at Safar Khan Gallery in Zamalek is truly a magical experience. Not only are you immersed in the art of the female body, but you won’t be able to stop thinking about it for days. From the beautiful faces to suave figures and more, Abdel Malak’s pieces demand to not just be seen, but also experienced.
His pieces create powerful dialogues between women’s identity, her rights, her suffering, our Egyptian heritage and what it holds in its historical meanings and the deteriorating state.
“The splendor, the beauty of life resides within her very soul,” Abdel Malak writes.
“Why are we so keen on burning out the spark that ignites our vigor? Why are we so keen on mercilessly, brutally extinguishing our glimmer of strength?
Constantly attempting to bring down our most viable weapon, it seems unfathomable that we are at war with you, the woman, the key to who we are, the key to life, the key to our very own existence.
Her warm heart is our home and her body our sanctity, our haven.
It is our imminent role to protect our livelihood, our life, our very existence. It is our solemn duty to cherish, to protect our heritage, our roots,” he proclaims.
“‘Metamorphosis’ and ‘Mind’ are probably my favorites as they both tell the story of how a girl evolves into a woman and how the pieces address her mind and not her body,” Abdel Malak tells us.
A graduate of Minia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, the young Egyptian artist has exhibited his works in Cairo, Alexandria, Paris, Washington, D.C. and London.
To see the magic unfold in front of your eyes, make sure to head to Safar Khan as his work will be on display there until Wednesday, March 9, 2016.
