A New Movement: Discovering Egypt on Foot
Cairo gives us so many reasons to hate living here, it’s too hot and humid, there’s always traffic and people are always on edge. However, there are those who leave Cairo in an attempt to escape the never-ending problems, and those who stay and look for the beauty within it.
Among those who are giving Cairo a second chance is the ever-growing Instagram account Cairo On Foot. All you need to know is that they want you to “Hop along on our adventures. The rule is simple: park, walk and discover. Let’s fall back in love with Cairo.”
Places they’ve already visited include the awe-inspiring Citadel as well as Abdeen palace and Ibn Tulun Mosque. Places you have never been to, never even knew existed but are more beautiful than ever, you won’t actually believe you’ve been living here your whole life and have never visited them.
Recently, however, they have added “weekend editions”, where they step out of Cairo to explore the hidden beauty of Egypt. Their latest trip was to Dakhla Oasis, where they stayed at the Tarfa Lodge. Needless to say, the images did indeed make us fall back in love with Egypt and think about taking a trip there ourselves.
This comes in the midst of a countrywide initiative to rediscover Egypt and shed any negative ideas that have been attached to the country in the past five years. We need more people who care enough about this country to stay and fight for it, shedding some light on its hidden gems.
More and more adventurous people have become interested in this sort of initiative, groups like Cairo On Foot are gaining popularity and keep getting bigger in size with each week. Egyptians are gladly forsaking their Saturday morning breakfasts by the Nile, for a legitimate walk and some exploration.
