I Asked Young Bedouins What They Want to Be When They’re Older and Here’s What They Said
Ahhh, Dahab! My beautiful, beautiful Dahab. To me, it is one of those places where you can’t just explain how you fell in love with, but at the same time you do know how, and very, very well. For those who have no idea what Dahab is, it is a magical little coastal town in Sinai, Egypt.
Diving is kind of a big deal there, but that’s not what I want to talk about right now, I want to talk about its people; the Bedouins. Yes, the people who basically run everything there. During my time there last weekend, I’ve gotten to befriend a few of the Bedouin kids while they braided my hair and tried to get me to buy way more bracelets than I should, and in return, I’ve gotten to know them a little bit more.
Here’s what they told me when I asked what they wanted to be when they grow up…
I just want to turn 13 for my big celebrations. I kiss my mother and father when I wake up and they give me money to buy new clothes. We also eat pizza. That’s all I want. – Amira
I want to drink mango juice whenever I want. – Wa’ad says with a big smile on her face
I dunno. – Waa’d’s little sister
To work with my uncle in his office and get paid 1000 EGP a month. – Mohamed
I want to become Alan Sugar, English people told me he’s rich. – Farah laughs
I’ll be a divemaster like my brother. – Mohamed
I want to get married by 19, and maybe cook ma7shi for my husband. – Hoda says jokingly (about the ma7shi part)
I just want the Feast and Sham El-Nasim to come so I can sell more bracelets to people. – Zeinab
