It’s International Friendship Day, which means it’s time to appreciate the friends who have been there through everything—from awkward phases and dramatic fallouts to questionable decisions that probably should have stayed in the group chat.

And because Egyptian movies and series have given us some of the most iconic friendships, we’re looking at the duos that represent every kind of best friend. The one who accepts you exactly as you are, the one who basically adopts you into their family and, of course, the one who gets you into trouble but refuses to leave you there alone.

El Kabeer Awy — Johnny & Hagras

The friend who would know it’s you even if your clone was standing right beside you.

Johnny and Hagras are one of El Kabeer Awy’s funniest duos. While Johnny is constantly coming up with dramatic Western-inspired ideas that do not always fit into village life, Hagras is usually right beside him, ready to support the plan without fully understanding what is going on.

He has seen Johnny’s wild ideas, strange decisions and unnecessary chaos—and somehow, he is still there. Probably because he is too confused to leave.

El Hareefa — Majed & Sheshtawy

The friend who accepts you exactly as you are—no pretending to be cooler than you actually are.

When Majed is forced to leave his comfortable life and transfer from a private school to a public one, everything around him changes. But through football, he earns the respect of his classmates and finds friendships where he does not have to prove himself or pretend to fit in.

Sheshtawy represents the friend you can be completely yourself around. You can say something embarrassing, wear whatever you want and admit you have no idea what is trending—and they will still save you a spot on the team.

Assal Eswed — Masry & Saeed

The friend who takes you in, makes you part of the family and might even give up their bed for you.

After living in the United States for 20 years, Masry returns to Egypt expecting a short visit. Instead, he loses his identity and money and finds himself stuck in a country that suddenly feels unfamiliar.

That is where Saeed comes in. He takes Masry in and welcomes him into his home, making sure he has a place to stay even when it means giving up his own bed. Saeed is basically the friend who says, “You can stay with us for a few days,” and before you know it, you are eating with the family, joining their conversations and being treated like you have lived there forever.

You may arrive as a guest, but somehow, you leave with family responsibilities.

EgyBest — Mohamed & Saber

The friend you experience the good, the bad and every “how did we get here?” moment with.

Mohamed and Saber begin as two friends from El-Marg with an idea that eventually grows into one of the Arab world’s biggest platforms for pirated films. Their journey takes them through success, pressure and the complicated realities of the digital world.

They are the kind of friends who go through every stage together. When things are going well, they celebrate together. When everything falls apart, they are still standing next to each other—possibly blaming one another, but together nonetheless.

Saheb Sahbuh — Gad & Osama

The childhood friend who always has your back—even when you decide to have a serious conversation with an ostrich.

Gad and Osama have been friends for life. When they receive an opportunity to work in the Gulf, their friendship is tested by distance and responsibility. One travels while the other stays behind to take care of their families, but their bond remains strong.

This is the friend who has known you since your most questionable phases and no longer asks why you do the things you do. If you start talking to an ostrich, they will not interrupt. They will probably stand beside you and wait for its response.

Ashab Wala Business — Karim & Tarek

The friend you fall out with, stop talking to for a while and eventually reunite with.

Karim and Tarek are friends and announcers working at a cable network, but competition begins to affect their relationship. Like many real friendships, their bond is tested when work and ambition get in the way.

But some friendships survive arguments, awkward silence and months of pretending you do not care. Eventually, one of you sends a random meme, the other replies, and suddenly, you are back.

El Raheena — Emad & Mostafa

The friend who gets you into trouble—but at least you are both going down together.

Mostafa travels to Ukraine searching for work after believing Emad’s promises. Things quickly go off track when Mostafa accidentally becomes involved in the kidnapping of an Egyptian scientist—and Emad ends up getting dragged into the chaos too.

This is the friend who says, “Trust me, I know what I’m doing,” right before both of you end up in a situation that requires several explanations and possibly a lawyer.

The plan may be terrible, and the consequences may be worse, but at least neither of you is dealing with them alone.

Which Friendship Duo Are You?

Maybe you and your best friend are like Johnny and Hagras: one creates the chaos while the other follows without asking enough questions. Maybe you are more like Gad and Osama, childhood friends who have seen every version of each other and still stick around.

Or maybe your friendship is closer to Emad and Mostafa’s—full of questionable decisions, unexpected trouble and a very strong “we’re in this together now” energy.

Because every friendship looks different. Some friends give you their bed, some forgive you after a fight and some accidentally drag you into an international kidnapping case.

Either way, you probably thought of at least one friend while reading this.

Malak cannot seem to get enough of Literature - so much so that she has pursued it in both her BA and MA, and the love affair is still going strong. Aside from her love for words, humans generally fascinate her. She spends a lot of her time analyzing the minds of people around her and watching criminal minds. She is still fairly new in adulthood, and until now, nothing has made sense in life but chocolate.
