Inclusive Pilgrimage: Mecca’s Grand Mosque Offers Smart Golf Carts for Tawaf Assistance
Every year, pilgrims journey around the Kaaba to perform the tawaf. To ease their movement, the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque introduced golf carts to assist the elderly and people with disabilities during their tawaf around the Kaaba.
Each cart, which can take up to 10 people, operates on a specially designated floor of the Grand Mosque: the mosque’s rooftop. Using the smart golf carts, pilgrims can navigate the mosque’s rooftop, which is accessible through the Ajyad Escalator, King Abdulaziz Gate Escalator, and Bab Al Umrah Escalator.
“The introduction of smart golf carts at the Grand Mosque is a significant step towards inclusivity and accessibility for all pilgrims, especially during the busy Umrah season,” said a spokesperson for the initiative.
The carts are available daily for 12 hours, from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m., and they cost 25 SAR per person. There are 50 golf carts available for use on a daily basis. To use them, you can buy tickets at sales points on the roof of the Grand Mosque.
