14 Artists Are Displaying Their Work in the Deserts of Saudi, Find Out Why

Desert X initially began as an event that takes place every two years in southern California, where visitors would come through the Coachella Valley in search of installations, sculptures, and performances. And now, Desert X Al Ula commissioned 14 Saudi and international artists to make artworks literally in the sand for the Royal Commission for Al Ula’s first major contemporary art project for the heritage site located in Al Ula in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Desert X AlUla is set to take place from the 31st of January till the 7th of March 2020. The exhibition’s installations are directly inspired by the serene desert location. When the old meets the new, the landscape of the installations translates the works of nature and mankind. It expresses the long and symbiotic relationship between the environment and the civilizations that established the cultural route resembling the transformative moment for Saudi Arabia throughout the past few years.

According to Desert X AlUla: “An exploration of desert culture, the exhibition is a cross-cultural dialogue between artists from Saudi Arabia and its surrounding region and artists from previous iterations of Desert X in California, taking its cues from the extraordinary landscape and historical significance of AlUla.”

WE SAID THIS: This public exhibition is the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia.
