Sawsan Badr Pulls out of Gouna Film Festival

The Nefertiti of the Egyptian cinema has pulled out of this year’s Gouna Film Festival (GFF) due to medical reasons, announcing on her Instagram the devastating news that she’ll be undergoing “critical surgery”.

Sawsan Badr is an Egyptian actress of film, stage and television. She received the Best Actress Award at the 34th Cairo International Film Festival, and she became well known for her distinctive roles in Death of a Princess (1980), Abo El Arousa (2018-), and Ayza Atgawez (2010).

The 61-year-old Egyptian actress was set to serve on the event’s jury in the Feature Film category alongside actress Dorra Zarrouk, director Marwan Hamed, and costume designer Nahed Nasrallah.

The third edition of the GFF is scheduled to take place in El Gouna, starting on Thursday September 19th, running till Friday the 27th. The event will feature a range of domestic and international productions including Parasite, which won the Palme d’Or at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival,​ and Pedro Almodovar’s latest film, Pain and Glory.
