Mo Salah’s Feminist Statement Immensely Supports Women Empowerment in the Region!
The position of women in the Arab World is a very sensitive topic. Some only highlight that women are oppressed in the Arab World, while some recognize the huge leap that has been taken towards empowering them. The past few years saw tons of laws and decisions empowering Arab women on different spheres. From women being ministers and ambassadors to proving themselves on all fronts! With all of this being said, we still have a long journey to go on in order for Arab women to have the justice they deserve.
Shortly after being named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People, Mo Salah just solidified himself as a feminist icon with a groundbreaking statement! In an interview with TIME, Mo said, “I think we need to change the way we treat women in our culture. It’s not optional. I support the woman more than I did before, because I feel like she deserves more than what they give her now, at the moment.”
Salah is one of the six athletes that were featured in the list, and is the only footballer! His stress on gender equality and its importance in the Middle East could make a huge difference when we consider the scope of his influence. He is now hailed by fans as a feminist icon! English Comedian John Oliver referred to Mo as “a better human being than he is a football player, and that he is one of the best football players in the world!”
