6 Ways You Know It’s World Cup Season
World Cup fever is heating up fast.
With the major sporting event slated to start in just a few days and Brazil the buzzword everywhere, here are six things that always happen every four years in the football world.
FIFA World Cup Anthem
Have you ever witnessed an event that happens every four years and always has its own anthem or song? No! And it’s not just any song. It’s always a hit by an uber pop star and literally everyone around the world knows the song’s lyrics or at least its music. Luckily, this time we have two smashing songs – one by Shakira and the other by Pitbull featuring J.Lo. Don’t they just make you want to dance?
Nike vs Adidas
The two eternal rivals in the global sportswear game always step it up when it comes to the World Cup. While Nike runs ahead with 19 million Facebook likes and 33.3 million Twitter followers, Adidas has 16 million Facebook likes and 1.1 million twitter followers, and the competition is firing up. This year, Nike is sponsoring 10 national teams which is more than it ever has before and one more than Adidas. However, the ball will belong to Adidas – as in every World Cup since 1970.
Epic Ad Campaigns
Major World Cup ad campaigns are launched alongside the tourney. Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Adidas, Nike – whatever major multi-national brand pops up in your mind, you will find it sponsoring, at the very least. Your favorite football players and artists will be on your TV 24/7 with ever more innovative ads.
Goal Line Controversy
Remember Almazrita team and the famous “Ya 7akam ya Mrtchy”? You will always find someone who knows nothing about football and just wants to give his opinion “Byafty” – or maybe he just can’t accept that his team failed or really sucks. Goal line technology seems to be insufficient when compared to home team conviction.
Cafes get crowded with vacations and big events, but nothing compares to World Cup season. Even for people who are “not into football”, you’ll find them sitting in the front row, their eyes glued to the big screen airing the match. Cheering for your team, holding your breath for 90 minutes or sometimes more, that adrenaline rush, the unforgettable moments that you share with friends or family during the World Cup – they’re all priceless.
New Football Icons
Despite the unhappy news of major football stars not being able to play in the tournament this year – Reus, Ribery, Falcao, rising star Lukaku and Valdes – almost every World Cup witnesses the discovery of new football icons. Why do you think Di Maria, Ozil and Khedira joined Real Madrid? We’re sure their incredible performances during the FIFA World Cup 2010 had something to do with it.
