Three Ancient Tombs Unearthed In Luxor After 3,500 Years

Archaeologists in Egypt just uncovered three tombs in the Dra Abu el-Naga necropolis, right near Luxor, one of the most historically packed places on Earth. The tombs date back to the New Kingdom period (1550 B.C.), a golden age of ancient Egypt filled with power, wealth, and iconic temples.

But here’s the twist: these aren’t royal tombs. They belonged to high-ranking officials, the people who actually kept the empire running.

Meet the Men Behind the Tombs

1. Amum-Em-Ipet

  • Lived during the Ramesside period
  • His job? Part of the team managing the Temple or estate of Amun, one of Egypt’s most important religious and political power centers
  • His tomb was mostly destroyed, but what’s left shows scenes of a funeral procession and a banquet, hinting at the honor he was given in death

2. Baki

  • From the 18th Dynasty
  • Held the title of Supervisor of the Grain Silo — a role that gave him control over one of ancient Egypt’s most vital resources, since grain wasn’t just food, it was also currency, making silos both banks and lifelines.
  • His tomb has a whole layout: courtyard, multiple halls, and a burial shaft

3. ES

  • Also from the 18th Dynasty
  • Wore many hats: Temple supervisor, scribe, and mayor of the northern oases
  • His tomb is a work-in-progress, with an incomplete hall that archaeologists are still exploring

What Did They Find Inside?

Along with the tombs, researchers found artifacts, statues. Even though some of the tombs were damaged over the centuries, they still hold detailed scenes that tell stories about burial rituals and social status.

Why This Discovery Matters

This discovery sheds light on the powerful figures who kept ancient Egypt running — not the pharaohs, but the officials who managed resources, led communities, and oversaw temples.

Understanding their roles helps us see how the empire functioned day-to-day, revealing the systems and people that supported one of history’s greatest civilizations.

Cultural Tourism Just Got a New Boost

Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities called the discovery a major win for both archaeology and tourism. With sites like this, Luxor continues to prove it’s not just ancient, it’s endlessly revealing new pieces of the puzzle.

Malak cannot seem to get enough of Literature - so much so that she has pursued it in both her BA and MA, and the love affair is still going strong. Aside from her love for words, humans generally fascinate her. She spends a lot of her time analyzing the minds of people around her and watching criminal minds. She is still fairly new in adulthood, and until now, nothing has made sense in life but chocolate.
