The Egyptian National Theater Festival Bounces Back With its 14th Edition
The Egyptian National Theater Festival has opened the door for submissions until the 31st of August. This is the 14th rendition of this important local theater event which is scheduled to take place between September 27th and October 9th.
Theater lovers in Egypt have long awaited the return of any theater event, and the comeback of this festival promises opportunities for playwrights, directors, actors, critics and spectators. Calls for submissions have been extended to theater companies, directors, and writers. The door is also open for submissions in other competitions such as theater critical writing and theoretical research.
Spearheaded and led by Ismael Mokhtar, Mokhtar detailed some rules and regulations regarding the submission process. First, the plays must have been produced by a local cast from July 1st 2020 till August 31st, 2021. Whoever submits must also provide proof that the production has had at least two nights of staging. The documents submitted with this should also include the CVs of the writer and director, along with the play’s approval from censorship authorities.
The 13th edition of the Egyptian National Theater Festival was held on December 20th, 2020, until January 4th, 2021, and included notable wins for productions such as Afrah Al-Qobba (Wedding Song), Al-Motafael (The Optimist), and Zal Alhekayat (The Shadow of Tales). The festival also honored notable figures in theater such as Salah El-Sa’adany, Sohier El-Morshidy, Mahmoud Yassin, and director Abbas Ahmed.
