The Brotherhood Defeated in Student Union Elections

Is it a sign of the times? Is the general status quo again the Brotherhood actually changing?

Student elections have concluded in Egyptian universities accross the country, and as the results rolled in Liberals and Indepents have won with taking more than 66 percent of the seats in 21 universities. Thus leaving the brotherhood behind with only 34% of the seats.

According to Egypt Independent online “The General Union of Egypt’s Students (GUES) is now set to be formed within a month. Forty-eight students will sit on the council as the heads and deputy heads of the student unions of a total of 22 public universities. Six additional seats would be allocated to students representing Al-Azhar University and select private universities.”

This year’s results are the complete opposite of last years, when the Muslim Brotherhood students won with unprecedented results. It looks like the tides are changing and the youth who usually take to the streets to protest the governments actions are now taking matters in their own hands.

We Said This: It will be interesting to see how these changes will play out till the end of the school year
