Stop Blaming Women For Your Sexual Harassment Issues
Sadly, females get harassed here in Egypt way too much. But the very disturbing part of it is that women are often the ones that get blamed. There are some very annoying sentences that are always used to justify these harassment. Like for example:
1. “She was wearing really tight clothing”
Aywa we ba3den? What does that have anything to do with you? And no I won’t go all “she has the right to wear whatever she wants, even if she goes out in a bikini” on you but trust me even if she respected your culture, wore a hijab and was totally covered up from head to toe it won’t make the slightest difference.
2. “She had very heavy makeup on”
It’s my freaking face. I will do whatever the hell I want to do with it! Grow out a mustache, put some dark lipstick on or just put a paper bag on top of my head and walk around. Guess what? That’s for me to decide and for you to live with.
3.”Perfumes and loose hair”
My perfume provokes you? Maybe you should try to ignore the smell, like I ignore your ugly odor when I walk past you 🙂 And for the hair? It grows on my head, so once again, I’ll do whatever pleases me with it.
4. “She was asking for it”
The infamous sentence. Trust me, no girl ever and I mean EVER dresses up or wastes one second of her life to try to look good for some random guys in the street. And if you really believe that, then you my friend need some serious help.
5. “She was walking in a dark alley where a group of guys were standing and still walked past them”
BEGAD? So just because I see a group of males, I should just change my direction? I never knew it was their private property.
I should at least have the right to roam the streets of my country.
Funny, right? What’s next? I’m a girl, so I deserve to be harassed??
You know what, I am a girl and with that comes so much power and pride. I will never be ashamed to be a girl and even you will not have the power to break me.
Making these excuses will never justify such acts. If anything, it only proves how uneducated the society has become. I mean what do we expect from parents that never taught their sons how to respect a girl, or a government that allows policemen to publicly check out and insult them. What happened to manners? What happened to guys being a safety sign and not danger? Walla howa khalas el regala mato fel 7arb? Because if harassing a girl makes you feel powerful or just gets you to laugh a bit then you need a total shift in your mentality.
I honestly don’t know when I’ll stop being a target to 3eyal seya3 on the streets, but don’t you dare tell me I was asking for it.
