Murder in Maadi: Clearing Up the Misinformation Surrounding the Tragic Death of Mariam Mohamed
Security forces announced the arrest of the two perpetrators who killed Mariam Mohamed in Egypt’s Maadi neighborhood. After several stories emerged on social media about the killing of a 24-year-old girl named Mariam Mohamed in Maadi, Egypt’s Public Prosecution released an official statement yesterday confirming that Mariam’s murder was due to an attempted robbery, and ordering the perpetrators’ arrest.
Speculation has been surrounding Mariam’s death since it happened, with some assuming she was a victim of sexual harassment, and others narrating incorrect stories about being ran over by the perpetrator’s car. However, the prosecution’s statement clarified the whole story, and the family of the deceased is now urging the public to respect their grief and not circulate any false information.
The statement said that, according to a witness, Mariam was walking by the street in Maadi, when a white microbus, that included a driver and a passenger, passed next to her in high speed. The passenger tried to snatch her backpack, while the vehicle continued to move, which caused her to fall onto a parked car, injuring her head, and falling dead. The CCTV cameras also revealed that a friend was accompanying Mariam, but she fled the scene fearing for her life.
The ambulance arrived a whole 30 minutes after the accident, to find the 24-year-old girl already dead. The Public Prosecution called Mariam’s friend to speak as a witness on the accident.
People were furious, and are currently calling for the urgent replacement of the Maadi district administration. Social media platforms were on fire after hearing the story, especially because the story was relatable to any girl or woman who walks in Egypt’s streets.
