Mashrou’ Leila Has Been Banned from Performing in Egypt
We have some bad news for Mashrou’ Leila fans in Egypt! The Lebanese indie band has been allegedly banned from performing in Egypt by the Syndicate of Musical Professions, following the Music Park concert in New Cairo last weekend.
A photo of the crowd raising a rainbow flag in support of the LGBTQ community in Egypt went viral, and ultimately led to that decision.
In an interview with TV host Mahmoud Abdel Halim on Al Assema channel, the Deputy of the Syndicate of Musical Professions Reza Ragab said that “Egypt is a country that is built on good values and traditions, and it will not tolerate gay art whatsoever.”
This raising of the flag in Egypt at Mashrou’ Leila concert was not a first. In 2016, the Lebanese band held a concert at the American University in Cairo when one of their fans did the same exact thing.
