Maria’s Note: Fighting Sexual Harassment In Tahrir

0

Protests against the Constitutional referendum have gathered, once again, hundreds of thousands in the streets of Cairo. During Tuesday, there has been a big protest taking place in Tahrir Square as well as different marches walking towards Abdeen Presidential Palace in Heliopolis.

One day before the so called “Final Warning’ rally in Egypt, several Human Rights groups, activists and citizens committed to fighting sexual harassment in the streets of Cairo, gathered to organize a united action against the numerous sexual assaults against women in the demonstrations.

The main target of these teams is to protect the victims, providing them with immediate help wherever they need it. Young women and men, most of them Egyptians, form these groups who actively work to raise awareness of this essential problem.

Although they are increasingly using other apparatuses, social media is still their main platform. You can find some of these collectives on Twitter under the names of @harassmap, @EIPR, @OPAntiSH, @TahrirBodyguard and @mosireen.
