Majoring in Camel Studies? Saudi Arabia’s New Diploma Takes Education for a Wild Ride

Quirky university diplomas are nothing new. Did you know that you can study Surf Science at Cornwall College’s Newquay University Centre? Or prop making at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama at the University of London? Yeah, there is no limit to what you can study. Joining the list is a unique and interesting diploma offered in Saudi Arabia: Camel breeding and care.

What Do You Get To Study In This Program?

This is the first time that camel breeding and care will be offered as an academic discipline in Saudi Arabia. The program came to life because of an agreement between the Camel Club and King Khalid University. The aim of this special program is to advance scientific and practical knowledge in the camel sector.

The program lasts two years, with three academic semesters and a semester reserved for field training. The diploma covers four main tracks: veterinary medical, economic, cultural historical, and legal organizational. Once students graduate, they can work in either of these four tracks.

Why Camels?

An entire diploma will be dedicated to the study of camels because they hold a very special place in the Kingdom, one of cultural and economic significance. Camels are even known as the “ships of the desert” because of the major role they play in the country’s history and tradition.

For centuries, not only have camels been integral to bedouin life, playing a major role in transportation, but they also have vital economic importance because of milk production and camel meat. They even play a role in racing and competitions, as camel races are all the rage now.

Seeing how camel studies have joined Saudi Arabia’s educational landscape, tell us, what other diplomas do you think they will create and why?
