Where Were the Arab Designers at The Met Gala This Year?

By Lojayn Eissa

The Met Gala is a yearly Haute Couture Ball that gathers the elitist of stars and celebrities the fundraising events that takes place in the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York City.

The Gala sets a new costume theme each year and the guests dress accordingly in outrageously beautiful designs. This year theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”.

We were expecting to see dresses designed by Arab designers in big events like this one such as Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, etc. Yet unfortunately, we couldn’t spot one recognizable dress on the red carpet. The fact that the gala had an Arab co-host, Amal Clooney, didn’t influence the representation of Arab fashion giants.

There has been a fashion revolution in the Middle East and it definitely deserves more attention like Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad, Rami Kadi and even younger generation of designers all over the Middle East. Considering also that the Middle East is the birthplace of this year’s theme.

WE SAID THIS: Arabs are always misrepresented…
