Highlights from the 2014 Cairo Half Marathon
The 2014 Cairo half marathon was just a few hours ago. New Cairo’s youngest addition, Cairo Festival City, hosted the event within its perimeters with perfect organization, abundance of security and spacious parking. Have I mentioned the amazing amphitheatre at the dancing fountain that hosted the after party? Loads of fun and in case you missed it, here are the highlights:
1. This Scene
This year, a 1K family run was introduced to the event. A lovely scene of whole families with kids and grandparents joining the fun.
2. This Guy
The King of Satire looked quite serious during the run. Dr. Bassem Youssef bravely finished the 21K and in his speech at the after party, urged everybody to keep up with a an active lifestyle and a healthy diet. He’s a heart surgeon before all.
3. That Guy
The most down-to-Earth man I have met. The Egyptian champ, Omar Samra, was a key guest speaker and handed over the prizes to the 7K winners. During his speech, he mentioned his health struggles as a child that only made him more determined. Definitely an inspiration to us all.
4. Those Guys
Radio’s funniest soreheads were there to host the after party. Sally Abd Al Salam and Wael Mansour did their best to lighten up the tired crowd of marathon finishers and guarantee lively cheers for the winners. You had to be there.
5. The Band
To add to the fun, the guys from Like Jelly played a collection of their beloved songs. Live, funny music definitely suited the crowds who cheered and celebrated in the beautiful sunny day.
6. Of Course, These Guys
The winners: female and male winners of the 7K and the 21K were handed their well earned prizes and gift vouchers from Reebok, Jumia and EFG Hermes by Omar Samra and HE Mr.Muhammed El Sawy. Congrats to the winners and all the finishers. You certainly earned the titles.
7. The Masters
Probably one of my favorite moments was when the masters (the above 40 runners) were called to the stage. Leading a healthy, active lifestyle knows no age limit.
8. The Charity
Half of the proceeds are donated to Ashanek Ya Balady foundation for sustainable development. Learn more about them here.
9. You Guys!
It would never have been such a huge success without you: all the participants, supporters and followers of the cause. Keep up the active spirits and let’s run Cairo together.
10. The Amazing Cairo Runners Team
The busy bees behind this great event and the many weekly runs they’ve had me and others join in. Thank you, guys! You truly run the city.
WE SAID THIS: Congratulations to Cairo Runners and everyone who participated in today’s event!
