Hanlbes Fasateen Campaign
Egypt has gone wild!
Hanlbes Fasateen, or as they call it in English, We Will Wear Dresses, is a new Facebook campaign that’s been launched to prove that women still have power and rights in this country.
The event will be taking place on the 24 of August, this campaign is made to encourage women to wear dresses or skirts and go on with their daily lives.
Michael Nazeehs, one of the campaign founders said that this campaign is made to make women of Egypt feel free and gain back their women’s rights again.
Apparently, Michael Nazeehs has been a part of other campaigns and this isn’t his first, one of his very successful campaigns was called “No To Harassment” which encouraged girls to open up and speak about their sexual harassment incidents.
We all know how sexual harassment has increased in the past couple of years, but the thing is, it was always there, no matter what you were wearing, it was never safe for women to walk in the streets of Cairo. We, women are always to blame when it comes to harassment, be it what were wearing, the way we walk etc.
Michael Nazeehs started this campaign because he heard a story that inspired him, a story that he thought he should bring more attention to.
An incident in the Delta city of Tanta, a young woman who objected to harassment by standing in front of her harasser’s car was run over in response, put aside that the driver was arrested and released not long after, it still doesn’t get her back.
The campaign has been going on now since right after Eid, and as many people are liking the idea, and think this is what Egypt needs, a lot of people disagree, with comments like “Being free means free to take off your clothes?” or “What religion and which country’s traditions allow women to walk in streets with such outfits?”
Up until now 2,100 people are attending this event, will you wear your dress?
