Going Blue for Autism
Today marks a special day in standing together as a community to fight one the harshest life time disabilities out there and those suffering from it. April has been marked International Autism day, yet it is April 2nd where the world takes time to light itself blue in global support.
What is Autism? It is a lifelong developmental disability that manifests itself during the first three years of life. Therefore commonly found in the early stages of a child’s life where they may find difficulty in maturing the traditional manner. The rate of autism in all regions of the world is high and it has a tremendous impact on children, their families, communities and societies. Hence us sticking together and creating awareness of the disease.
Throughout its history, the United Nations family has promoted the rights and well-being of the disabled, including children with developmental disabilities. In 2008, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities entered into force, reaffirming the fundamental principle of universal human rights for all.
The United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared 2 April as World Autism Awareness Day (A/RES/62/139) to highlight the need to help improve the lives of children and adults who suffer from the disorder so they can lead full and meaningful lives.
Local venues such as The Medley are working hand in hand with this awareness where they will be lighting their Nile front venue blue in support of the cause. If you are looking to show your support then please join the Egyptian Autism Society where a walk has been organized starting 4pm today at the Opera House.
