German Tourist Dies at Red Sea Resort Due to Shark Attack

No, this isn’t a scene out of Jaws!

Early Sunday morning, a German tourist in the coastal city of Al-Qusair on the Red Sea was attacked and killed by a shark. The 52-year-old man bled to death after a shark bit off his leg.

This marks the first incident in five years since the last reported shark attack in Egypt. Officials have yet to pinpoint the type of shark that caused the attack, but since the 2010 incident involving an Oceanic White Tip, there seems to be fears that it may be of the same species.

The 2010 shark attack forced all major resorts in Sharm El sheik to close down for nearly a week. In 2009, Al-Qusair witnessed the death of a French woman due to a shark-inflicted wound.

WE SAID THIS: How will this affect Egypt, one of the world’s leading dive destinations?
