Egyptian-Founded Affectiva Raises $14 Million in Funding for Emotional Intelligence
Affectiva, the company that can detect emotional intelligence in video images of people, has just raised another $14 million in funding, totaling $34 million in venture capital to date.
Co-founded by Egyptian Rana el Kaliouby, who has also been announced as the new CEO, Affectiva uses cutting-edge technology — computer vision and deep-learning — to analyze facial expressions and body language and map them to emotional states.
The company hopes to eventually map more complex emotions, but until then, they have amassed 4.25 million videos from users in 75 countries to produce more than 50 billion emotion-related data points.
So far, Flying Mollusk Studio has used Affectiva’s technology to develop a psychological thriller video game that becomes more difficult when players become more nervous or scared and easier when they can master their emotions.
Advertisers have also used Affectiva’s software to test audiences, gauging their reactions with non-verbal cues and analyzing their emotional responses.
