Egypt Reaches A Record Low in Cinema Revenue, What Does This Mean?

By Nour El-Miligi

Since the COVID-19 outbreak took over the world, many institutions were forced to halt their operations for over three months in an attempt to curtail the spread of the new coronavirus. After things kind of settled down, and eventually curfews were lifted, many institutions resumed their work once again within the capacity of 25% as a safety measure. The recent decisions by the Egyptian Government included the reopening of Egyptian movie theaters, and although it was supposed to be a good thing, movie revenues just didn’t agree.

As theaters owners expected, the public fear of catching the virus caused many Egyptian movie theaters to witness their lowest ever movie revenues since its founding. So we decided to list the movies that are currently playing in theaters as well as the revenues they’ve earned so far.

Ras El Sana

Via Mad fim

We’re in denial reporting this, but Eyad Nassar, Ahmed Malek, and Shereen Reda’s movie currently playing in Egyptian Theaters has only brought in 2,516 Egyptian Pounds to its producers since the curfews were lifted.

Blue Elephant 2

This masterpiece that had a previous sequel winning awards for being phenomenal and introducing new concepts in terms of graphics and production, has unfortunately suffered financially in its revenues for the second sequel. Despite the huge success it witnessed prior to curfews imposed, we’re sorry to tell you that it currently collected 5,705 Egyptian Pounds only.

Banat Sanawy

As shocking as it might sound, the movie starring Jamila Awad, Huda El Mufti, Mayan ElSayed, and Mai ElGheity, on its the first day of replaying after lifting the curfews, only got 62 pounds collectively and by now has only collected 30,000 Egyptian Pounds.

Sandok El Donia

If you’re still in shock feeling bad about the revenues of “Banat Sanawy”, just imagine how the cast of this movie would feel for only collecting 9,000 Egyptian Pounds throughout the entire show time in theaters since it reopened. This movie features superstars Rania Youssef, Khaled El Sawi, and Salah Abdallah.

Welad Rizk 2

This is the sequel of “Sons of Rizk 1” that caused a huge sensation in the world of cinema, achieving massive popularity and success financially. Only making 8,300 Egyptian Pounds since it’s the comeback is a disaster by all means.

El Feloos

The movie starring Tamer Hosny, Zeina, and Khaled El Sawi has so far achieved the highest revenues, 167,000 Egyptian Pounds. Taking into consideration the current circumstances, it could be worse.

Les Baghdad

The movie starring Mohamed Imam and Amina Khalil made 172,000 Egyptian Pounds, which is considered a significant number in comparison to the other movies above. But if we’re talking production-wise and if it aired in ordinary circumstances, the number is a complete disaster.

WE SAID THIS: Are you as shocked as we are?
