Arab Films That Are Waiting for a 2020 Oscar Nomination

We all can’t forget the Lebanese movie Capernaum by Nadine Labaki, which was nominated in the ”Foreign Language Film” category at the 2019 Oscars. This may have inspired other Arab filmmakers this year to submit their work in the same category after its name got changed to ” The Best International Feature Film” category.

Let’s go through these Arabic movies that are set to make us proud this year!

It Must Be Heaven

This Palestinian movie is directed by Elia Suleiman  who won the Jury Prize for his film Divine Intervention at Cannes in 2002This film revolves around ES who leaves Palestine to find an alternative home however, Palestine never leaves him. Numerous nominations like Palm D’Or and Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Screenplay were granted for this movie.

Dear Son

A Tunisian movie directed by Mohamed Ben Attia. The film revolves around a couple who worked endlessly on building a better future for their son, but they’re left shocked when they realize that Sami, their only son, is about to join ISIS in Syria. It stars Mohammed Dhrif who won The Best Actor Award in this year’s Gouna Film Festival.

Adam

Our third feature film on this list is Adam, directed by Maryam Touzani. Which, got selected as the Moroccan entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. The film revolves around an unwed pregnant woman, Samia, who seeks a job opportunity, and finds shelter with a baker called Abla. The movie is actually based on the director, Maryam Touzani’s real life, where her family sheltered an unwed pregnant lady because it was illegal in Morocco.

Poisonous Roses

An Egyptian feature film that is directed by Ahmed Fawzi Saleh who was granted the Saleh Abu Seif Award for Best Artistic Contribution. The storyline is about Saqr who really wants to evolve and change his life but his love for his sister is not letting him, this movie stars the megastar Mahmoud Hemeida.
