British Film Institute: Multiple Contemporary Arab Films Make the Cut
London theaters are about to feature multiple contemporary Arab films, courtesy of the British Film Institute (BFI). The festival, “The Time is New: Selections from Contemporary Arab Cinema,” will run at BFI Southbank until October 5th.
The festival will feature multiple film genres including fiction, short films, and documentaries. All movies featured were released from 2019-2021, and focus on breaking the stereotypical image of Arabs, whether it be on the communal level or on the personal level. The eclectic collection includes the Egyptian award winning film Souad, directed by Ayten Amin, along with many hallmark Arab films like You Will Die at 20, Caramel, The Nightingale’s Prayer, 200 Meters and many more.
This impressive program was organized by the founders of the arthouse cinema, Cinema Zawya in Egypt, Youssef Shazli and Alia Ayman. The British Film Institute has shown due diligence in selecting the finest selection of films to showcase at such an important, multi-cultural festival.
