A Guide to Alexandria’s Top Bakeries

By Malak Khaled

Forget how juicy a burger is and let’s focus on the softness of pastries, the warmth of toasted bread, and the tingling feel of jam on your tongue. These bakeries are not hidden gems but they are totally worth the hype.

Sourdough

Sourdough opened in mid-2023 in Kafr Abdo, so it is fairly new to town, but it has quickly managed to secure loyal customers. The bakery offers fresh hand-made pastries and bread. And it promises the use of organic ingredients with no additives or preservatives.

The fresh taste of the Sourdough bakeries is living proof of their claims. The artisan bakery is especially famous for its spongy sourdough bread with its perfect layer of crust, hence the name. However, their cinnamon and custard blueberry brioche are frankly slept on.

Their items vary from baklava buns and lemon cakes to beetroot bagels and bee sting brioche. To die for is an understatement when it comes to Sourdough. A friendly tip: Order early in the morning because items sell out fast.

Croissant D’ Alexia

Croissant D’ Alexia has transformed the Sultan Hussein, and they are now taking their fairy dust to Kafr Abdo too. Croissant D’ Alexia hopes to give people a better day, and truly it does.

Their menu includes both savory croissants and heavenly sweet bakeries. They can be considered on the pricey side, however, the portions and quality that are unmatched make it worthwhile.

Croissant D’ Alexia is a blend of the West and East, bringing us both the San Sebastian Cheesecake and the Om Ali with nuts. That said, true to their name, the croissants are extra special, baked with a hint of bliss.

Délices

A place as old as time, Délices was owned and managed by the same Greek family since 1922. When you manage to find the perfect recipe, then of course that legacy must live on. Délices can be found in Mahatet El Raml, and its vintage aesthetic adds to its appeal.

Picking a favorite pastry when it comes to Délices is like choosing a favorite kid. You simply have to stand in front of their huge fridge, get lost in a trance, and wait until a piece of cake calls to you like a siren.

Süss

While Alexandria has its share of delectable bakeries to satisfy your sweet tooth, Süss in Cairo was a reason to make any Alexandrian jealous. Don’t despair, though; Suss has opened in Kafr Abdo, Alexandria.

From the German pancakes “pfannkughen” to San Sebastian cheesecakes by Rami Soli and many sugar-free options, Alexandria’s pastries are going to the next level.
