The Doubling of Cairo Metro’s Ticket Prices Receive Initial Approval
According to Al Masry Al Youm, the Minister of Transport, Hisham Arafat, proposed the idea of doubling the metro’s ticket prices — raising it from 1 EGP to 2 EGP — to the cabinet, and they have given their initial approval. The cabinet wants Arafat to propose the idea o the Parliament’s Transport Committee in hopes that the increase of the price ticket will help with the metro’s financial crises.
The metro has been loosing an exponential amount of money, reaching 550 million EGP in the last three years.
While the decision wasn’t a major shock to anyone since the rumors have been circulating for years. Arafat even confirmed on Tuesday’s press confrence that the idea of doubling the prices has been circulating since 2011. He also added that the metro is in debt to the Electricity Ministry, with debts reaching 220 million EGP, and the new metro line will cost 330 Euros, and the second line will cost as much, if not more.
