Before You Watch Spider-Man, Here’s a Look Back at Egypt’s Funniest Superheroes

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day swinging into Egyptian cinemas on July 30, everyone’s talking about superheroes again. But before you start arguing over your favorite Marvel character, let’s not forget that Egypt has been making its own caped (and occasionally very chaotic) heroes for decades.

Sure, ours might not always have billion-dollar CGI budgets or multiverses, but they definitely make up for it with comedy, parody, and some seriously unhinged origin stories. From super-strength triggered by a song to a guy who literally gains dog powers, Egyptian creators have put their own hilarious spin on the superhero genre.

Kalb Baladi: The Hero Raised by… a Dog

If you thought Spider-Man getting bitten by a radioactive spider was strange, wait until you hear this one.

Kalb Baladi follows Rocky, who was literally raised alongside a dog named Fresca and even nursed by her as a baby. The result? He develops dog-like abilities, including an incredible sense of smell, heightened instincts, and a tendency to attack his opponents.

His unusual talents eventually catch the attention of Lieutenant Baligh, who recruits him for a police mission to take down the notorious criminal Warda Al-Halawani.

It’s one of those movie premises that sounds completely ridiculous—and somehow that’s exactly why it works.

Tag: Egypt’s Own Superpowered Twin Story

Released in 2023, Tag gave audiences a more modern superhero comedy.

The film follows Tag, played by Tamer Hosny, who discovers he possesses incredible powers including super strength, super speed, and even invisibility. At first, he simply wants to use his abilities to help people while juggling everyday life.

Things get complicated when he discovers he has a twin brother named Haroun, who also has powers—but chooses to use them for completely different reasons. What follows is a fantasy-filled clash between good and evil, packed with comedy, action, and plenty of sibling rivalry.

Farafero: One of Egypt’s Earliest Superheroes

Way before cinematic universes became a thing, Fouad El-Mohandes was already experimenting with superhero-inspired comedy.

In the 1966 classic El-Ataba Gazaz, he plays Abdel Hafeez, an ordinary man recruited to replace a deceased spy because they look identical.

His secret weapon? Whenever he hears the song “El-Ataba Gazaz,” he suddenly gains extraordinary strength, allowing him to defeat groups of enemies with ease.

The character, known as Farafero, was inspired by the American cartoon hero Mighty Mouse, but with a distinctly Egyptian comedic twist that made him unforgettable.

El Ragol El Enab — The Superhero Who Made Fun of Superheroes

Long before superhero parodies became mainstream, El Ragol El Enab gave us one of Egypt’s funniest takes on the genre.

Starring the comedy trio Hesham Maged, Chico, and Ahmed Fahmy, the series follows a scientist, who accidentally creates a formula that turns ordinary people into superhumans. His first test subject? The simple-minded Asfour, who suddenly finds himself fighting crime.

Naturally, saving the world doesn’t exactly go smoothly. Through the absurd situations they land in, the show lovingly pokes fun at every superhero cliché while still delivering plenty of action and laughs.

Banat Superman: When Superman Accidentally Starts an Egyptian Family

Leave it to Egyptian comedy to ask the question no one else did: What if Superman came to Egypt… and completely forgot his mission?

The 2019 series stars Yosra El Lozy, Riham Hagag, and Shery Adel as three sisters with extraordinary abilities.

Their story begins when Superman arrives in Egypt on an important mission but gets sidetracked after falling in love on Al Haram Street. After he leaves, the woman discovers she’s pregnant and eventually gives birth to three daughters who inherit his superpowers.

It’s an intentionally over-the-top parody that mixes superhero mythology with Egyptian family comedy in the most unexpected way.

Super Miro — The Hero Who Didn’t Need Superpowers

Not every superhero needs actual superpowers.

Amy Samir Ghanem stars as Amira Taftaf, a social media manager constantly underestimated by everyone around her—from her overprotective father to her demanding bosses.

Dreaming of becoming someone who can help others, she transforms into Super Miro, relying not on magical abilities but on a specially designed suit and gadgets built by her friend.

The result is a lovable heroine whose biggest strength isn’t flying or laser vision, it’s refusing to give up despite constantly being underestimated.

Egyptian Superheroes Might Be Weird… But That’s the Fun of It

Whether they’re powered by science experiments, dog instincts, catchy songs, high-tech gadgets, or simply pure comedy, Egyptian superheroes have always done things their own way.

So while Spider-Man: Brand New Day is about to swing into cinemas, don’t sleep on the local heroes. They may not be saving New York, but they’re definitely saving us from boredom—and honestly, that’s a superpower in itself.

Malak cannot seem to get enough of Literature - so much so that she has pursued it in both her BA and MA, and the love affair is still going strong. Aside from her love for words, humans generally fascinate her. She spends a lot of her time analyzing the minds of people around her and watching criminal minds. She is still fairly new in adulthood, and until now, nothing has made sense in life but chocolate.
