Israel Bombs 20 Sites in Lebanon Ahead of Ceasefire Talks: Horrific Scenes Unfold
By Islam Salah
On November 26, 2024, Israeli airstrikes hit 20 sites across southern Lebanon and Beirut, escalating the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah.
According to Euronews and The Guardian, the strikes, which targeted Hezbollah’s strongholds, came just hours before a potential ceasefire agreement. These attacks left significant destruction in their wake, including several residential buildings in central Beirut, where three people were reportedly killed and at least 26 others were injured.
The Proposed Ceasefire Plan
The proposed ceasefire includes a 60-day transition period. Under this plan, Israel would withdraw from Lebanon, and Hezbollah would relocate its heavy weapons north of the Litani River, away from the Israeli border.
The Lebanese army would then redeploy to the border region to maintain control. A US-led committee would oversee the implementation of the agreement, with provisions for Israel to act against any imminent threats should Lebanese forces not intervene.
The Human Toll
The ongoing conflict has taken a heavy toll on Lebanon. More than 3,700 people have been killed since October 2023, with the majority of casualties being civilians. The bombings have also displaced over 1 million people, forcing many to flee their homes.
A Path Toward Peace?
While the violence continues, the ceasefire could pave the way for a peaceful resolution. The international community has expressed firm support for the proposed agreement, with G7 foreign ministers calling for an immediate ceasefire and urging Israel to accept the deal.
If successful, the ceasefire could provide a much-needed break from the violence, allowing both sides to rebuild and refocus on peace. However, with continued military action on Israel’s side, it remains uncertain whether the ceasefire will hold.
