Archer Aviation to Launch Air Taxis in Abu Dhabi by Late 2025
In a move set to redefine urban and inter-emirate travel, California-based and leading electric flight company Archer Aviation has announced plans to launch its air taxi services in Abu Dhabi by late 2025.
With promises of reducing travel time, easing traffic congestion, and offering a sustainable alternative to traditional transportation, this innovation could mark a significant shift in how residents and visitors navigate the UAE.
What Is an Air Taxi?
An air taxi is an innovative form of transportation using electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
These small, electric-powered vehicles are designed to bypass ground traffic by flying at low altitudes for short distances, offering quick, efficient, and eco-friendly travel.
Why Is Abu Dhabi Getting Them?
The UAE’s ambitious vision for sustainable and advanced transportation makes it an ideal market for air taxis.
As the country already accounts for nearly 40-45% of the business jet market in the MENA region, the introduction of air taxis could further solidify the UAE’s position as a leader in aviation and advanced transportation solutions.
The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) has partnered with Archer Aviation to make the UAE the first international market for its services, including plans for manufacturing facilities and headquarters in Abu Dhabi.
Meet Midnight: The Air Taxi of the Future
Archer Aviation’s Midnight, an eVTOL aircraft, is designed for efficiency, safety, and comfort:
• Capacity: 4 passengers + 1 pilot
• Range: 161 km per charge
• Top Speed: 241 km/h
• Flight Features: Redundant electric propellers for added safety
The Midnight is a sustainable, noise-reduced alternative to traditional vehicles like cars and helicopters, providing a premium experience with minimal emissions.
Flight Routes
Archer Aviation’s air taxis will serve two main types of routes:
• Inner-city travel: AED 300–350 per trip, lasting just 5–10 minutes.
• Inter-emirate routes: AED 800–1,500 for trips between cities like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with flight times of 20–30 minutes.
Passengers will enjoy seamless connections at key locations like Abu Dhabi International Airport and major urban hubs.
Time vs. Cost
Air taxis offer significant time savings compared to traditional ground transportation, albeit at a higher cost:
• Air Taxi (Inner-city): AED 300–350, 5–10 minutes
• Air Taxi (Inter-emirate): AED 800–1,500, 20–30 minutes
• Taxi (Ground): AED 250–300, 60–75 minutes
• Public Bus: AED 25, ~60 minutes
For those prioritizing time and convenience, air taxis present a faster and more premium alternative.
A Focus on Safety and Certification
Safety is at the core of Archer Aviation’s operations. Their electric air taxis feature multiple redundant systems, including a dozen electric propellers, to ensure secure flights even in the event of component failure.
Before launching commercially, Archer must complete rigorous certification processes with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). These processes involve extensive testing of aircraft design, operational protocols, and safety standards.
The company has already cleared key FAA milestones and is actively working toward full certification. The newly appointed UAE lead, Dr. Talib Alhinai, will oversee operations and partnerships to ensure a seamless launch in Abu Dhabi.
Competition Breeds Innovation: Joby Aviation
Archer Aviation isn’t the only player in the UAE’s air taxi market. Earlier in 2024, Joby Aviation, another US-based company, applied to become the first certified air taxi operator in the United Arab Emirates and is planning to launch operations in Dubai by 2026.
While details about Joby’s pricing are yet to be revealed, its goal is to offer cost-effective services, focusing on other partnerships such as with major hubs like Dubai International Airport and Palm Jumeirah. Additionally, Joby Aviation has spent 12 years optimizing its propellers to reduce noise to an absolute minimum.
Environmental Considerations
While air taxis promise convenience and speed, their environmental impact is an important factor to consider. Archer Aviation’s electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, like the Midnight, are designed for minimal emissions. They produce fewer emissions than traditional vehicles, such as helicopters and cars.
However, the overall environmental footprint depends on factors like noise reduction and the electricity source used for charging, among others. It also depends on the materials used in production and the long-term sustainability of eVTOL operations.
Ready for Takeoff?
With vertiports strategically placed at airports and urban landmarks, air taxis will integrate seamlessly with the UAE’s existing transport infrastructure. For instance, travelers landing at Abu Dhabi International Airport can reach Emirates Palace in under 10 minutes, cutting down travel time significantly.
By combining speed, sustainability, and convenience, air taxis are poised to revolutionize how people travel across the UAE and beyond.
