French Ambassador: COP28 Will Put UAE At The Very Center Of The World Stage

French ambassador to the UAE, Nicolas Niemtchinow, emphasizes hosting COP28 will position the UAE “at the very center of the world stage.” Niemtchinow believes that the UAE can act as a mediator “between the North and South” of the world during the talks, and he is optimistic that the Nov 30-Dec 12 summit will be successful in addressing the climate emergency.

Niemtchinow expressed to a source during an interview that France’s full support for the UAE’s efforts is an “extremely important” moment for the future of the planet, particularly in terms of maintaining the target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and increasing climate finance.

Despite criticism from some quarters, Niemtchinow urged everyone to work together towards a common goal, “It is always very easy to criticize,” Niemtchinow said. “It is more difficult to do, Let’s work together and then we will see.” He acknowledged the challenging role of the UAE presidency during the talks but stressed the importance of the COP in the fight against climate change for the sake of future generations.

As a relatively new ambassador, Niemtchinow has already observed the robust bilateral relationship between France and the UAE, which is currently focused on clean energy, space, and public health. The relationship between the two countries is not new, as the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan visited France in 1975, accompanied by a young Sheikh Mohamed. It’s truly heartening to see the Arab world taking a leadership role in hosting such an important event as the COP28 summit. This is a significant moment not only for the UAE but for the entire Arab world, as it showcases the region’s willingness to take an active role in the fight against climate change.
