Moving to another country can be an exciting yet daunting time for anybody, especially for kids who will need to prepare to start attending school in a different country and culture. As a parent, if you are considering moving abroad, it’s important to consider the impact that this is going to have on your child’s education and make sure that you do as much as you can to prepare them for the upcoming changes. Going to school overseas can be an exciting experience for kids if they have the support of their parents. Here are some top tips to help prepare your child for attending school in another country.

Prepare in advance

Going to school abroad is a massive change for kids, so make sure that they are aware of the idea long before you do it. If your kids know that you are thinking of moving abroad in the future and there is a possibility that they might eventually be attending school in another country, the event itself is likely to be less daunting for them when it finally happens. In addition, this gives you the chance to speak to your kids about the countries that they might like to study in the most and learn more about the different curriculums, exams and more.

Do your research

Take plenty of time to learn about admissions expectations and more in the country that you are planning to move to long before you arrive. This will ensure that you are able to research the different schools available in your new area and choose the best one for your child based on their academic and other individual needs and preferences. If your child needs to take an admissions exam or learn a new language before they are able to start studying at the school, giving yourself plenty of time in advance will make the process less stressful for both of you.

Learn languages

If you already have some ideas of where you might like to move in the future, it’s a good idea to get your child started with learning the language as soon as possible – ideally from a very early age, so that they will be fluent or almost fluent before you move. This will make the process of moving to a different country and school much easier on your child since there will not be any language barriers for them to navigate along with getting used to the difference in environment and culture, making it easier for them to socialize and settle in.

Visit often

Going on vacation to the country that you are planning to move to in the future will help your child get used to it and make the move less daunting for them, since they know what to expect. While it might not be possible for your child to get the school experience before they leave, it may be worth considering making friends with local families who have children of a similar age, so that you can talk to them about their school experience and help your child learn more about what to expect once you move.

Encourage independence

Raising your child to be independent and taking them on several adventures will help them prepare for studying abroad. Children who love trying new things and are encouraged to do so by their parents are more likely to thrive during the transition to living and studying in a different country.

If you are planning to move abroad, a change of school for your child can be one of the biggest challenges you’re up against. Keep these tips in mind to fully prepare them for this life experience.
