15 Reasons Why New Year’s Eve Isn’t Worth It
Another New Year’s Eve, another excuse to go out or get away, except that it turns out to be massively overrated. And yet we’ll do it again next year!
1. Just planning for it is stressful. Whether it’s figuring out where you’re traveling or choosing which party to attend or throwing your own NYE bash, by the time you get to the night of the 31st, you just want to get over with it.
2. You set your expectations up unreasonably high and it never goes as planned, anyway.
3. Fact: On NYE, you’re much more likely to lose or break something – a phone, a limb, a relationship.
4. You’ll be thinking back at what you did last year and making comparisons to this one, and the glaring differences (for instance, you had a special someone to kiss after midnight last year and this one you don’t) or glaring similarities (for instance, you’re still at the same soul-sucking job) will serve as fuel for your winter depression or all-night binge.
5. You spend a ridiculous amount of money.
6. And yet you probably won’t remember most of it. And no matter what you did, you’ll struggle to even recollect where you were a year from now.
7. Let’s be honest, whatever you do remember, you’ll probably regret.
8. At least there’s photographic evidence – although, most of the photos will be blurry and your hair and/or makeup is a mess.
9. At a party, there are only one of two options: Either you spend the entire night bored out of your mind and hating your friends for dragging you out, or you do a bunch of stupid shit simply because the last digit of the date is changing.
10. You may end up having to collect your date from the bathroom floor – or vice versa.
11. The mind-numbing small talk at NYE gatherings with randoms you’ll probably never see again.
12. If you partied, you’re likely to be so hung over on New Year’s Day that you immediately break your resolutions to exercise more, eat healthy and quit smoking. Instead, you spend all day in bed, wake up with a cigarette or two, sleep some more, and then gorge on fast-food delivery.
13. If you don’t go out, it’s just another unremarkable night. What’s the big deal?
14. If you spend it alone, even if you did enjoy your time, you’ll hate how it sounds when you get back from the holiday break and everyone asks you what you did for NYE.
15. If you spend it with family, it’s going to be awkward and there may be a physical altercation over something that happened years, maybe decades, ago.
