US Launches Cruise Missiles at Syrian Air Base in Response to Chemical Attack
Around 59 Tomahawk missiles have been fired against targets of the Syrian regime. President Donald Trump ordered military action against the Assad regime as a response to the devastating chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun; which is believed to have been executed by the government forces. The missiles have been fired at an air base in Homs.
Only a few hours ago, Trump officially announced the strike “Tonight, I ordered a targeted military strike on the air field in Syria from where the chemical attack was launched. There can be no dispute that Syria used banned chemical weapons and violated its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention; they just ignored the urging of the UN Security Council. Years of previous attempts at changing Assad’s behavior have all failed and failed very dramatically.”
This is the first direct military action the US has taken against Assad’s regime in the country’s six-year civil war. The strikes could very easily be interpreted by the Syrian regime as an act of war. Trump’s decision to launch the strikes is the most significant military action of his young presidency.
