Saudi Arabia Launches Their First Ever Girls’ Council with Only Men Attending
It was quite an amazing initiative for a country not known for giving women a platform in public life. But when Saudi Arabia wanted to show off its inaugural girls’ council in al-Qassim province, they forgot about one important thing: women.
While Saudi Arabia’s lack of gender diversity is hardly a surprise in a country where women must seek a male guardian’s permission to work, study or travel, the Internet was just not going to let this go.
Luckily, the girls weren’t entirely banned from the council, but were allowed to watch the meeting via video feed from a separate room, according to Al-Araby. We honestly don’t understand the point of this girls’ council if girls aren’t going to be present in it. Shame on you, Saudi Arabia. It’s 20-freakin’-17, let your women be actual women.
