Outrage Over US Veto Against Ceasefire In Gaza Leads Activists To Call For An Enactment of Article 377
The United States on Friday vetoed a UN resolution that was calling for an immediate ceasefire amid escalating genocide in Gaza. The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter to urge the organization’s most powerful body to call for a ceasefire. While 13 members voted in favor of a brief draft resolution, put forward by the United Arab Emirates, and Britain abstained.
The US vote has been met by criticism and outrage worldwide as their veto had hindered a stop to killings of innocent civilians in Gaza under Israeli occupation. A UN article has been called out to validate overlooking of the US veto under certain conditions. The article reads:
“If the Security Council, because of lack of unanimity of the permanent members, fails to exercise its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security in any case where there appears to be a threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression, the General Assembly shall consider the matter immediately with a view to making appropriate recommendations to nembers for collective measures, including in the case of a breach of the peace or act of aggression the use of armed force when necessary, to maintain or restore international peace and security.”
As a response to this, politicians and activists are trying to circulate the article. Among those efforts is an open petition on Change. org by Allison Dyslin to “Use power today to enact Article 377A. To supersede the Veto Power of the United States and call for an Immediate and Permanent Ceasefire in Gaza…SAVE INNOCENT LIVES. “
